First edition of Midnight Herring Underwater Aged Sparkling Wine set for release

On November 1, 2025, Mazza will host an exciting event featuring the release of the first limited edition bottles of Midnight Herring Underwater Aged Sparkling Wine from South Shore Wine Company.

Inspired by Lake Erie’s storied bootlegging history, 13 cases of Midnight Herring spent more than one full year submerged at a depth of 130 feet on the shipwreck site of the legendary John J. Boland, Jr. vessel. The wine was aged in optimal darkness, rocked by the gentle undulation of the water, resulting in an elegant effervescence that preserves the crisp acidity of the Riesling. Mazza partnered with a Westfield, New York diving and boat crew from Osprey Charters to sink and retrieve the bottles from the Boland wreck.

The November 1st release event will take place from 6:00 to 8:30pm at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle State Park and will include a talk by David Frew, author of Midnight Herring: Prohibition and Rum Running on Lake Erie (The Lake Erie Quadrangle Shipwreck Series, Book 4) and commemorative gift-boxed bottles Midnight Herring Sparkling Wine available for sale. Remaining bottles will be available for purchase at South Shore Wine Company in North East, PA beginning November 2nd.
