(Image Caption from article) Mazza Vineyards, along Lake Erie in the town of North East, was easily the top producer of Pennsylvania wine in 2020.
Depending on who you talk to, there are anywhere from 300 to more than 400 businesses that are making and selling wine and/or cider across Pennsylvania.
Many are families in farm settings, but that number is also getting bumped by an increasing number of “mom-and-pop” urban operations.
Wineries are required annually to turn in their production and sales numbers to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB), and that data includes everything from the location where the wine is sold to how much of the grapes/juice come from Pa. vs. out of state.
Here’s a list of the top 25 Pa. producers in gallons of wine/cider made and top 25 in gallons sold in 2020, based on records from the PLCB:

Here are a couple of other observations:
- It appears there was a surplus of about 600,000 gallons made in the state in 2020, presumably from the sales downturn due to the pandemic.
- Almost 3.5 million pounds of fruit from outside of Pennsylvania was purchased by Pa. wineries, accounting for a bit more than 25% of production.
- On the
- juice side, about an extra 600,000 gallons was brought in, accounting for about 35% of the juice used. So, roughly about 30% of Pa. wines are made from out-of-state fruit.
- There are almost 100 wineries licensed that sold no wine in 2020.
